The Australian Talented Youth Project 2008 (20-26 January)
Brings
talented young people from all over Australia to the National Capital
for a week-long mentoring program in their chosen art form. It also
includestours of our cultural institutions and local landmarks and
culminates in attendance at the Australia Day celebrations.
The
Project provides numerous outcomes for the selected young artists and
for Canberra, showcasing it as a centre of artistic excellence. In its
first year the project resulted in isolated young people being awarded
scholarships
to study in the ACT. Support for young people in the rural and remote
areas affected by the drought is particularly important now and the
young people also become ambassadors for Canberra and the ACT Region.
Now in its second year and fitting well into the 'Live in Canberra'
campaign,
the project has support from a wide range of ACT businesses and
educational and cultural organisations who are providing assistance
with mentoring, workshop and performance venues, transport, publicity
and administration.
Appearing at the launch will be:
Sir William Deane; Professor Chubb from ANU; as well as the Quantum Leap dance group.
Several
students who participated in the 2007 program will present their art,
including a short film documentary by James Hunter, some singing by
Kate Rafferty, a saxophone performance by Oisin Smith-Coburn and a
display of visual art by Alyssa Coursey.
